FAQ

  • The entrance ticket to the Genoa Aquarium, like the tickets for all the other structures included in the AcquarioVillage (The City of Children and Teens, Bigo and Biosphere), combined included, ARE NOT NOMINAL.
For tickets purchased online, the name that appears on them is that of the person who made the purchase, or the gift recipient.
In case of impossibility to carry out the visit, the tickets can therefore be transferred to third parties.
  • The FIXED DATE ticket requires, at the time of purchase, the reservation of the date/time slot chosen to carry out the visit. Date and time slot are binding and must be respected.
The FLEXI ticket is valid for one year from the date of purchase, does not require immediate booking and gives the possibility of making a date/time slot change, avoiding the loss of the ticket in the event of inconveniences.
  • If you have purchased a FIXED DATE ticket, we are sorry but, as per the conditions of sale, this is not possible.
If you have purchased an OPEN FLEXI ticket, you can change the date/time slot of the visit once, within 2 hours of the chosen entry time, at the following link: ?
  • Disabled people with documentation certifying their disability are entitled to a discounted fare ("reduced" ticket).
The companion of the 100% disabled person is entitled to free entry; in case of online purchase, the companion must go to the cash desk to collect the free ticket, upon presentation of the above-mentioned certification.
In the case of disabled people aged between 4 and 12, we recommend purchasing the "child" ticket, which is cheaper than the "reduced" ticket.
  • Sorry, no animals are allowed inside the Genoa Aquarium with the exception of guide dogs for blind people.

On the front line for their rescue

The species

Distributed in the temperate and tropical waters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the loggerhead turtle ( Caretta caretta ) is the most abundant marine reptile in the Mediterranean Sea, whose most important breeding areas are found along the coasts of Greece, Libya, Turkey and Cyprus.

In Italy the main nesting sites are found in southern Sicily, the Pelagie Islands and Ionian Calabria. In recent years the nesting area has progressively moved northwards, as evidenced by the recent nestings observed in Tuscany, Veneto and Liguria.

Our commitment

The Aquarium of Genoa has been intervening on sea turtles in difficulty since 1994, and since 2009 it has been the institutional contact for the hospitalization of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (in agreement between the State and the Regions), in collaboration with the CITES Service of the Carabinieri.

In 2017 it received, together with the Livorno Aquarium, recognition for this activity from the then Ministry of the Environment; the two structures operate in collaboration with each other and with the local authorities to guarantee each individual a state of health suitable for returning to sea.
In this regard, a memorandum of understanding is in force between the Aquarium of Genoa and the Coast Guard , which defines the collaboration between the two entities for recovery interventions for marine fauna in difficulty.

Over the years, around 150 specimens have been welcomed by the Genoa Aquarium; Unfortunately, not all are stories with a happy ending.
Among the causes of hospitalization: interference with fishing tools; the ingestion of foreign bodies, for example plastic bags mistaken for jellyfish, components of the diet of these reptiles, the impact with motor boats.

Once the necessary care has been received to return to health, individuals are released into the sea. The activity is conducted in collaboration with the Coast Guard, the Carabinieri Cites unit of Genoa, and the Fondazione Acquario di Genova ONLUS.

Awareness and monitoring activities

On the occasion, in 2021, of the accidental discovery of a baby Caretta caretta on a beach in Finale Ligure (SV), the Genoa Aquarium coordinated a working group made up of: Municipality of Finale Ligure, Savona Coast Guard, University of Genoa, University of Pisa, Zooprophylactic Experimental Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Val D'Aosta, Menkab Association, Tethys Institute, WWF Liguria and the Regional Environmental Protection Agencies of Liguria, Tuscany and Veneto.
Experts and volunteers monitored the site of the sighting in order to identify the deposition site and organized awareness activities to spread good management and protection practices to be adopted in the event of new events.

Following the discovery of a loggerhead turtle nest in Levanto in 2022, the group of experts coordinated by the Aquarium and composed in this case of ARPAL, the Municipality of Levanto, the Coast Guard, the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Val d'Aosta , University of Genoa with the collaboration of the Cinque Terre National Park, Life on the Sea ONLUS association and Legambiente, implemented a monitoring activity that lasted approximately 2 months.

The initiative involved around 100 volunteers, mostly young people between 18 and 25 years old, who took turns supervising the nursery at night.
The “Caretta Calabria Conservation” Association also provided support for the laboratory analyzes on the eggs, which were found to be unfertilized.
