Tropical corals: a heritage to be preserved.

Tropical corals

A heritage to be preserved

Tropical corals

The Aquarium of Genoa has been studying the ecology of tropical corals in its curatorial tanks and in nature for years.
Thanks also to the collaboration with international partners, the staff of biologists and aquarist technicians has acquired a wealth of knowledge and skills, which has led to the development of protocols aimed at the reproduction and breeding of corals in a controlled environment.
The Genoa Aquarium is also recognized by the competent authorities as a suitable structure to accommodate illegally imported and confiscated corals.

The collaboration with the University of Milan BICOCCA

La collaborazione con l’Università di Milano BICOCCA
Since 2020, the Genoa Aquarium and the University of Milan-Bicocca have been scientific partners for the protection of coral reefs, with particular reference to the reef of the Maldives Islands.

The objectives of the collaboration are: the development of joint research initiatives and the training of each other's staff of researchers and biologists for the conservation of coral reefs.

The collaboration involves the development of new coral restoration techniques (restoration of coral reefs), the monitoring of the health of the madreporic colonies and their reproduction in a controlled environment.

As part of the agreement, the Aquarium hosts the Genoese headquarters of the MaRHE Center, the Research and Higher Education Center that the Milanese University has in the Maldives, where new techniques are developed for the care and recovery of coral reefs. The laboratory, located in the technical spaces dedicated to the curatorial tanks, has an area of 45 m2 and hosts two systems of tanks for a total of 10,000 l where 75 species of coral are found, all reproduced at the same Aquarium.
The area can be visited by the public as part of some special guided tours.

A joint laboratory between the Aquarium and the University of Milan Bicocca was also inaugurated in the Maldives, at the MaRHE Center, in summer 2022.

Several joint scientific missions are planned to the Maldives Islands, during which what has been learned thanks to the research conducted in Genoa will be applied in nature.
