  • The dolphins hosted at the Aquarium of Genoa are bottlenose dolphins ( Tursiops truncatus ), the most widespread cetacean species in aquariums and dolphinariums around the world.

Bottlenose dolphins, like all cetaceans, are considered species at risk of extinction and are therefore included in the lists of the Washington Convention (CITES) which regulates their trade throughout the world. In Europe, trade is limited to specimens born in a controlled environment and since 1992 the taking of dolphins at sea has been prohibited, as has the entry of animals captured at sea, even where the capture was carried out outside the borders of the Union.

The specimens hosted by the Aquarium are registered in the European studbook (census book) which is part of the EEP Program of the EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

The Aquarium of Genoa received recognition as a Zoological Garden in 2011 according to Italian legislation and has been part of EAZA since 1998.
